An anime theme park based on the films of Studio Ghibli, who produced titles like the Oscar-winning Spirited Away, is set to open in central Japan this November. The opening of the park has been eagerly awaited by fans ever since the news broke in 2017. The studio also showed a series of renderings that offered fans a glimpse inside the park.

The Ghibli Anime Park Will Be Located 150 Miles West of Tokyo In the Central Aichi Region

While the site of the anime park is currently under construction, its location is not a secret. It is being built within a huge area of parkland some 150 miles west of Tokyo, in the central Aichi region. According to available documents, its total cost will be 34 billion yen or nearly 300 million dollars. The park will have five distinct areas, and three of those will be open to the public at the opening. The first one is the Dondoko Forest, and it includes a life-size model of Totoro’s house from 1988 classic My Neighbor Totoro. Visitors will also be able to go inside a Totoro-like statue found at the back of the house.

There Will Be No Big Attractions or Rides In the Ghibli Anime Park

Another area that will open in November is the Hill of Youth, where visitors will find the World Emporium antique shop from the 1995 film Whisper of the Heart. Finally, the third area will be called Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse, and it will be an indoor space where all of the studio’s secrets can be found by visitors. It will feature fantasy-filled exhibitions about the various films of Studio Ghibli, including displays themed around characters like Catbus and Robot Soldier.

So far, the other two areas of the anime park are set to open at some point in 2023, but no exact opening dates have been announced yet. One will be the Mononoke Village, centered around the Princess Mononoke film, and the other is the Valley of Witches. It was inspired by the titles Howl’s Moving Castle and Kiki’s Delivery Service. According to an additional statement, Ghibli Park will have no big attractions or rides. Instead, visitors will be taking a stroll, feeling the wind, and discovering the wonders it has to offer.
