Employee Norma Valkenaar and Franchisee Matt Cobo Came Up With the Idea for the Donut Kits
Norma Valkenaar, who is an employee at California Dunkin’, once asked if she could bring donuts, frosting, and sprinkles for her nephews at home, and that led to the birth of the new idea. Quickly, Dunkin’ franchisee, Matt Cobo, started carrying donut kits in his two locations in Concord and Walnut Creek.
The boxes were filled with plain donuts and a variety of sprinkles and frostings, allowing buyers to create their own flavors. Now, fans of the new idea can buy the four-donut option that includes chocolate frosting, strawberry frosting, and vanilla frosting, as well as two varieties of sprinkles, or choose the nine-donut option that has the same frostings but three varieties of sprinkles.
Other Dunkin’ Franchisees Throughout the Country Have Started Offering DIY Donut Kits of Their Own
In a social media post, Cobo said that creating the DIY kits was their small way of trying to bring happiness to someone’s day. According to him, the simple joy of creating a donut of their own can make many kids light up, and being a part of creating such a moment made him and his employees happy. According to Dunkin’, other franchisees across the country have also started to offer DIY donut kits.
The DIY donut kits have become very popular, and many have embraced the chance to get creative with varieties that are not typically available. So far, half strawberry – half vanilla with different sprinkles on every bite is one of the more popular new flavors, but many others are expected to follow.
