It’s no surprise that TikTok has gradually become the trendsetter when it comes to fashion. Just last year, TikTokers gave birth to a curious new term — cheugy. The term basically describes everything tacky and outdated, from Gucci belts to over-the-knee boots. Due to the cyclical nature of the trend cycle, however, what is considered outdated today will be trendy sometime in the future. According to fashion experts, that future has already come, and cheugy is making a comeback.
What Is Cheugy Really?
In the simplest of terms, cheugy is everything out of date, basic, and simply not considered cool anymore. It originated as a way to label the “millennial girl-boss aesthetic” and has gradually grown to describe predominantly millennial traits and fashion choices, a.k.a. “millennial-core.” It includes everything from Rae Dunn pottery to side parts and the wildly controversial skinny jeans.
Why Is it Back So Soon?
It’s literally yesterday that cheugy staples like skinny jeans and ballet flats were exiled, so how is it possible for them to be back into fashion so soon? Simple — the trend cycle is rapidly accelerating due to overconsumption and overproduction. As a result, the pace at which trends come and go is much quicker than it was before. Fashion writer and trend analyst Mandy Lee says that “when it comes to fashion, the future (trends) are always closer than we think.”
These Cheugy Items Are Hot Again
By now, you’re probably wondering — which cheugy staples are back in the game? Over-the-knee boots, ballet flats, white tank tops, oversized bags, statement necklaces, festival-style outfits, and clothing with written text on it are just some examples of everything that’s back in the spotlight.
Judging by Fendi’s over-the-knee boots and Riccardo Tisci’s version for Burberry fall/winter 2022, it’s clear that these boots are no longer exiled. The edgy collection offers a dark and seductive take on the once labeled cheugy accessory.
It’s only right that after the ultra-mini bags (think Jacquemus), it’s back to oversized bags. Praised for their practicality, oversized totes seem like something that belongs to every style and wardrobe. For a streetwear vibe, choose Balenciaga Moto, and for timeless classics, draw inspiration from Louis Vuitton and Goyard.
Haute hippie fashion is back, baby! Think Coachella, crochet bikinis, macramé tops, high-rise pants and skirts, short, low-cut tops, and everything boho in between. Versace, Balmain, and Chloé have all gone all-in on this fringe aesthetic for the Spring and Summer 2022 collection. Cheugy or not, these styles are here to stay. At least for a little bit.
