Robert Reed: Now
Being tall certainly has its advantages. You automatically stand out in a crowd, visibly distinct from the rest. Tall people have a certain kind of presence about them that seems to expand with every added foot. Height is undeniably coveted in our Western societies with women eternally teetering about in sky-high heels in hopes of adding precious inches. Louboutins aside, individuals who have height on their side are statistically paid more for the same position than their shorter counterparts. While there are endless perks to being tall, it certainly isn't all glitz and being-able-to-reach-things glamour-- especially when it comes to dating. Standing at 5'10'', having to worry about both jeans and men that fit my height frequently becomes exhausting. Countless men have been immediately eliminated due to what I can only assume is their ability to easily do the limbo. There have been endless occasions where friends have reacted to a man I think is attractive with, "Dude, he's like three heads shorter than you". The reality is, I will probably not wind up standing under the altar with a man who has to lift his chin to say "I do". Now before my words are misconstrued as snobbery at its finest, the height discrimination is far from one sided. Many a man will rule me out just as quickly, unable to even fathom the idea of dating a girl taller than them. Most tall girls have had the unpleasant experience of being blown off with a snide comment that inevitably leaves you feeling like a freak of nature, an ogresses to only be referred to as Fionna. On more than one occasion I have thought about making the move to a Scandinavian country where any Lars or Kristoff could sweep me into their giant arms. Is Swedish really that hard to learn? While shorter women frequently gain the classification of "cute" or "adorable", taller girls simply don't have the same associations, no matter how slim or in shape they are. Listen, even though we never have to use step ladders does not mean we lack the desire to be able to leap into our man's arms without causing a slipped disk or two. So for all you tall women out there playing the dating game, we, your single girl sisterhood, get it. Hold your head up high and always remember Beyonce's poignant lyrics; "Tall girls, we run this motha".
